The largest river in Bohol is the Inabanga River in the town of Inabanga in the northern coast of Bohol, some 71 kilometers from Tagbilaran City. Before the Spaniards came to Bohol , the town was called Inabangan because of the river, the only waterway to the interior of the town. The river was infested with crocodiles but was still popular as a bathing resort. Every year, the river would always claim a life, whether through drowning or a crocodile attack. The locals, who were very superstitious, believed that this yearly loss of life was the people's rental of abang in the local dialect, for the use of the river. Thus, the name Inabangan River or rented river.
When the Spaniards came, however, they had difficulty in pronouncing the name. the foreigners shortened the name ot Inabanga, and the name is still being used today.
although tours in the Inabanga River have not become as popular as those in the Loboc River, the existence of a fishing village, the Inabanga Nature Park and Fishing Village, has slowly attracted tourists to the area. The entrance to the fishing village is located near the St. Paul the Apostle Church and the St. Paul Academy. From there, tourists take a ride from a motorized banca and are given a river tour first before being taken to the fishing village, which is just five minutes away. The Inabanga River is 25 kilometers long and is 7 to 10 meters deep. It is said to be wider than the Loboc River.
A must see area along teh river is the place called Macaban Cave, an underwater cave from above the water level. The place is also called Macaban City by locals. the area is said to be the home of supernatural beings or engkantos.
The Inabanga Nature Park and Fishing Village is a two-hectare park operated by the proprietors of the Bohol Beach Club. It boasts of a restaurant that serves fresh and native dishes and also has a fishpond where guests can catch tilapia and have these cooked. Future expansion plans include a function hall, a campsite, a firing range and a swimming pool to entice guests to visit the area.
